Honda Parts

With the 2019 CRF450L, Honda has split the difference right down the middle and built a 50-50 machine that, unique among dual-sport motorcycles, is capable in exactly equal parts of riding the street and tackling the rough stuff.

The 450L fits right in. Stylistically, it can get in line for the Honda family portrait, between the 250s and the 650s, next to its 450X brother, and look just right. Do you like Honda red? Good. That’s the only color the 450L comes in.

Its on-road performance is surprisingly good. Though it comes stock with knobby tires and a dirt-bike narrow seat, the 450L skipped nimbly along the pavement and was very well-mannered on canyon roads and even on the highway. Its six-speed gearbox allowed me to climb to 60 mph quickly and cruise at speeds above that comfortably. And Honda has made a smart move in extending the metal part of the frame all the way to the license plate, which will allow a longer-distance rider to attach saddlebags or other luggage.

Aprilia Motor Bike

The standard class is awash with great motorcycles. It should be: Standards are reliable riding companions—comfortable, sporty bikes that afford room for a passenger and kicks for the rider. But the best standards transcend basic transportation and compete for our affection with much more purpose-focused motorcycles—ones designed with the track in mind, or for covering hundreds of miles at a stretch, or for managing urban commutes. We ask those same things of our standards, but all at once. And nothing delivers like the 2018 Aprilia Tuono V4 1100 RR, making it a back-to-back winner in the category.

The Tuono V4 1100 RR elevates itself above its peers by borrowing the heavily from Aprilia’s RSV4 superbike, and 2018 sees the Tuono nudge even closer to its stablemate. Among filched components are top-shelf Sachs suspension fore and aft, Brembo M50 Monoblock calipers, and a top-level suite of electronic aids that include launch control, wheelie control, and cornering ABS. But the pièce de résistance is Aprilia’s 65-degree V-4 engine.

Tuned for the street, the Tuono’s mill cranks out a furious 159 hp and 80 pound-feet of torque on the Cycle World dyno. Strong numbers, sure, but they don’t even hint at the addictiveness of the exhaust’s yowl, or the jaw-dropping roar of the V4’s very rapid inhalation. The noise is Italian exoticism at its finest. Simply put, whacking open the throttle of the Tuono V4 is one of the most thrilling experiences in motorcycling.

Nicolae also admits that the triple clamps were the difficult part of the build, as it involved engineering, sourcing the proper raw material, and the CNCing. Another tough part of building The Mechanik came from integrating the Moto Gadget electronics into the motorcycle.

Not all details are immediately apparent, but that doesn’t make them any less impressive. For instance, the fuel cap is from a vintage Boeing 707 jetliner. “From the very beginning, when I saw the BMW K 100 fuel tank, I knew that the best fuel cap would be that one,” Nicolae said. “I used to work in the airline industry for some years, and I still have the contacts. The maintenance facility for airplanes is located right across the street of my shop, so I got one. I had to machine it, to engineer some parts, but the result is good.”

The headlight is an impressive item. The seemingly over-engineered unit can quickly be flipped over to reveal a number plate. “The theme of the bike is about mechanics,” Nicolae says. “I thought that making the headlight reversible would be a nice challenge, and it was! It’s bold, but it is what it is.”

Anodizing was chosen over powdercoating to protect aluminum parts for both practical and aesthetic reasons. “Powdercoating adds a lot of thickness to the parts—like .4, .5 mm, even,” according to Nicolae, “which is okay for big parts like the chassis. But for smaller parts, the appearance is bulky—you know what I mean. Anodizing adds zero thickness, the edges remain edges, and the machining can be seen. From the technical perspective, the anodizing process is protecting really well the aluminum parts.”

Obviously, The Mechanik was intended to be more than a showpiece. “Form follows function. A bike must be ridden, first of all. If it happens that is also looking interesting, it’s even better. It’s like a 2019 1000cc sport bike,” Nicolae says, “with less power, but very good handling and brakes.”

CCM Motor Bike

CCM build on the rampant success of their Spitfire with pukka off-roader

CCM first told MCN of their intention to produce a Scrambler variant of the Spitfire a few weeks ago – and now we can exclusively reveal the bike, and it looks like it’s got serious potential.
The Spitfire Scrambler uses the same hand-made steel trellis frame as the Spitfire although the subframe is slightly different to account for the new twin, high-level exhaust. The Scrambler also has increased ground clearance over the Spitfire, thanks to longer-travel fully-adjustable suspension. Adding to the off-road credentials are new wheels (19in front, 17in rear) shod with dual-purpose tyres. Completing the look are a set of raised off-road handlebars, a purposeful sump guard and other rugged styling features, such as a new two-tone dual seat. Seat height is just 830mm and the dry weight is a featherweight 123kg.
The rest of the componentry, such as the Brembo brakes and 55bhp 600cc single-cylinder engine are all shared with the Spitfire, the rampant success of which made this new Scrambler version possible.
“When the Spitfire 600 was unveiled by its very first customer at the MCN Show in February, no-one had any idea into how this unique machine would set hearts alight,” says John Drogan, Sales and Marketing Manager at CCM. “Within seven days, all 150 allocated build slots had been sold!

“We will increase production beyond the 150 units of the original Spitfire, however this will remain as a very special series of motorcycles.”
The Scrambler is priced at £8995 (plus £279 OTR charges), with production set to commence later in the year.

CCM have created something very special with the Spitfire Café Racer and manage to mix hand built elegance with serial-production build quality.
Draped in swathes of billet aluminium and designer labels it would cost double the price if it was built in an artisan’s lock-up and its exclusivity makes it more appealing than anything you’ll find in your local dealer.
It might not have the performance and handling of its most popular rivals, but it’s extremely light, easy to ride and perfect for sunny Sunday cruising.

Each and Every Parts Of Harley Bike

Brainstorming with friends around a fire pit at Cuatro Casas surf hostel in Baja last November, our crazy idea sounded great at the time. We were down there riding dirt bikes, surfing and watching the Baja 1000 a hundred miles south of Ensenada, Mexico. Of course, after enough beers, we started dreaming up ways to participate in the legendary off-road event personally. I’ve volunteered for pit-crew duties in previous Baja races since 1983, and have even done a few seasons behind the wheel in VW-powered Class 11 and Class 12 buggies. I’m no pro by any means, but my dusty Baja roots run deep. As we drank and smoked around the fire, everyone agreed that since Biltwell specializes in chopper parts and riding gear, racing a custom two-wheeler made the most sense. Because a traditional dirt bike wouldn’t be relevant to the bulk of our customers, the idea of an off-road Sportster started to make sense too. Biltwell staffers Otto and Westy were the first guys to take my bait.

The National Off-Road Racing Association Mexican 1000 is a point-to-point off-road rally that snakes down the entire length of the Baja Peninsula from Ensenada to San Jose del Cabo. It’s 1,000 miles—not kilometers!—of off-road racing, plus another 300 miles of poorly paved transit stages, that runs the gamut from washboard ranch roads to deep sand washes, rocky ascents, technical water crossings, dreaded silt beds and many miles of whoops created by 800 hp trophy trucks in the Baja 1000. NORRA’s format differs from the Baja 1000 in that it includes five days of racing with timed checkpoints at the beginning and end of key stages. This format breaks the race up into smaller chunks, which we agreed might improve our chances of success since we could work on the bike every night between stages. Of course, this multiday format also complicates logistics by throwing pit stops, rider changes, overnight accommodations and other time- and money-sucks into the mix. Get everything right, and one week later, you and a dozen co-riders, chase-truck drivers, friends and volunteers get to party in Cabo for a night or two before traversing a landscape twice the length of Florida north to the San Diego border and civilization. Like I said—this had the potential to be a very bad idea.
